Are you a pagan?

I recently read in a UK newspaper that in 2002 we spent £12 million on celebrating Halloween. This year we will be spending £120 million, but this pales into insignificance compared to our cousins in America, who will spend a massive $4.7 Billion on celebrating “Trick or Treat”.

But what’s the problem? I’s all just harmless fun isn’t it? Kids dressing up, decorating pumpkins and getting sweets from their neighbours. What’s the big deal?

Halloween is in fact the ancient pagan festival of Samhain and YHWH our God considers following other religions as spiritual harlotry. In fact, the FIRST Commandment states “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me” (ex 20:2-3 NKJV).

He gave explicit instructions to His people not to follow after other gods. He told the children of Israel not to intermarry to prevent this and He even instructed them to execute anyone who tried to induce Israel to follow other gods. Read Deuteronomy chapter 13 to understand how much God hates this practice.

So how much paganism have we incorporated into our society? How much has been assimilated into Christianity? And is there pagan tradition seeping into the assembly of God’s people?
